As a family portrait photographer, I have the pleasure of forcing my children to take family pictures every year. I tell them that they can choose their outfits, and then we try to go to different photography locations to make it fun and different.

What to Wear

As my kids are getting older, I am finding that bribery is working better than the mere excitement of a photo session these days. You can see in their choice of outfits, that the pink tutus and little bow-tie days are long gone.

But I still love them, and can’t get over how fast they are growing. So like it or not, this photography mom is going to take birthday pictures every single year.

Addie is my oldest. She wanted to wear a white tank top and I convinced her that this pink jacket was a good idea. We got one picture with her in it, but I know that she will wear it this winter so it was worth the splurge.

I picked out Grayon’s outfit, if it were up to him he would have on Adidas soccer pants and a matching hoodie.

Hair & Makeup

Hannah is my middle child, and she wanted her hair braided. She’s usually rocking a messy bun, so Analisa was gracious enough to come over and fix their hair before our session.

I recommend hair and makeup to every single one of my clients.It really does add a finished touch to each and every portrait.

Printed Portraits

After each session, I only edit a few of my favorite images and order prints as well as wall portraits. I order small prints for all of the grandparents, and we send those out as Christmas gifts. I also make the kids suffer through a Christmas card session each year.

Next, I ordered a 20 inch framed portrait of the image below. Never worry about mixing new pictures in with the old, it tells the story of your family and is what makes your house a home.
