Hello, my sweet photographer friends! I wanted to share some advice about blogging since this is something that a lot of photographers know they should be doing but struggle to be consistent with. Google is the best way to find qualified photography clients outside of your personal network. And most of us know that and do our best to rank on Google…but it can get confusing! One of the simplest ways to start ranking higher on Google (and one of my personal favorites) is to blog consistently. And to do that, you need a blog posting schedule.

I’ve seen firsthand how beneficial a blog can be in my own photography business. And one of the best ways to make it work is to stick to a consistent blog posting schedule.

The main focus should be on creating original, high-quality content that will help your readers. How often can you do that?

Every photographer’s blog schedule will look a little different. And that’s fine! Just because someone else blogs 5 days a week doesn’t mean you have to. However, it’s important to keep in mind that your posting frequency has an effect.

Your schedule might change over time as well, to reflect your current goals. For example, when I first started, I was updating my blog 2-3 times a week. This really helped me climb the rankings quickly and get established. Once I was in a spot I was happy with, I could relax a little. I still update my blog consistently, but now I just post once a week.

Remember, consistency is one of the keys to successful blogging, so it’s important to try to come up with a schedule that is sustainable and specific. Knowing you want to post twice a month is good. Knowing you want to post on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month—that’s better!

Troubleshooting Your Blog Schedule

Of course, blogging is only one part of your business. And as an entrepreneur, you have a lot going on. (Trust me, I know!)  So what happens if you start off with a blog posting schedule and then can’t stick to it? Or if blogging is something you keep putting on your to-do list and never crossing off?

First, recognize what issues are at the heart of your blogging trouble. Do you struggle to come up with ideas? Or dislike writing? Maybe you find all the complicated SEO details hard to master. Figure out why blogging is difficult, and you’ll have some idea of what to change and where you need help.

Second, determine if your blogging fatigue is chronic or just a phase. Is this a long-term situation, something you keep running up against month after month? In that case, it may be time to evaluate where your business time is being spent. Is blogging the right place to cut back? And if so, what would a more sustainable schedule look like?

On the other hand, maybe your blog posting schedule was working out really well for a while, but life has gotten busier lately. Maybe your kids are out of school for the summer and you don’t have that focused time with no distractions to work on your blog. Or maybe you’re dealing with a family emergency or a personal health crisis.

Gathering this information gives you a clear idea of what parts of your blog process are causing you trouble, so you can be deliberate about changing your schedule so that you’re doing the smart thing, not just the easy thing.

For example, even when I cut down to once a week, blogging was still taking more of my time than I wanted. It’s just not something I particularly enjoy, and there are other parts of my business I would rather focus on. But I know how important blogging is and I wanted to make sure I kept up with it.

For me, the solution was outsourcing. I found a writer who specializes in blogging for photographers and have been working with her for several years now. This ended up being a great decision for me because it freed up a lot of time and mental energy. If I have something specific I want to blog about, I let her know, otherwise, she takes care of it and I don’t have to think about blogging at all. It’s so nice to know that my blog is being updated every week and that my business has all the benefits of blogging without me having to do anything.

Testing Your Blog Schedule

Creating a blogging schedule that really works for you may take some experimentation. Be patient with yourself as you figure it out! Ideally, give yourself 6-12 months to try a particular schedule. This will give you a good idea of whether you can keep it up over a sustained period of time. It’s also important to give yourself enough time to settle into a schedule instead of just giving up after a few weeks because it’s new and challenging.

Hopefully, with these tips for creating a sustainable blogging schedule in mind, you’ll be able to come up with a blog post schedule that serves you well right from the start. But if not, remember, you can always tweak and adjust until you reach that sweet spot.
