What do You Love?

“You should take that image down, it’s blurry.”

..That is what a professional photographer once told me about the image above.

But do you know why it’s blurry? It was shot with an amazing lens with an f stop around 1.4. What does that mean? That means that it was supposed to look like this and was supposed to capture what I was focusing on. The background was supposed to be blurry. Also, these are my babies. Our life is messy, and sometimes blurry, and oh so imperfect. But I love this picture for so many reasons….

I had just purchased my first Nikon D750 that month with a sigma art 1.4 lens. We drove to the lake (that’s another story) just for this session. In my mind, I wanted to capture the sunset, the mossy trees, & the water in the background. The lake is one of my favorite places, and I wanted to shoot this session there, of my babies. Looking back, this is still one of my most favorite images. It’s my style, all the things I love, and gives me happiness. I love the pink, the sunset, and the people in this picture.

What Brings You Joy?

If you are a photographer (or not… whatever your career path is!) I want to ask you, why are you doing this? What brings you joy?

To begin, I have to ask all the photographers, why are you shooting at your locations? What is everyone in your image wearing? Do you photograph families, or newborns, or seniors, and if so, why? Do you love what you photograph? If not, only shoot what you love.

Guide the people behind the camera into the vision you see. Help them with the colors, the location, what to wear, and what time of the day looks the best. Bring great joy to your art, love your images more, and most importantly, help your clients to love their images more. You will create beauty and love that freezes their memories in time. And last but not least, be sure to print your pictures. These is no greater gift.

And if you aren’t a photographer, focus on your joy. Do what you love. Make it everything you want it to be. Get up & out of bed, go running, have a great day at work, or just be the best mom you can be. Whatever your calling is, make it you, and make it happy.

Have a great week everyone and focus on what you love! ❤️
