5 Questions to Help You Choose the Perfect Outfits for Your Family Photos

There are so many factors to think about before deciding on your outfits. This is one reason I’ll meet with you before your session. You don’t have to decide what to wear alone! I’m happy to give you advice and ask questions to help us narrow down the best options. In the meantime, here are 5 questions you can ask yourself that will help you figure out what to wear.

What is Your Family’s Style?

Think about what your family likes to do together. Are you outdoorsy, bookish, into sports, pet lovers? This can help you decide if you want a more casual or formal vibe, bright colors or neutrals, and even give you an idea of what accessories might be fun to include.

What is Your Home Decor Like?

Since you’ll probably be using at least some of your family photos in your home, it makes sense to take your home decor into consideration. Whatever outfits you choose should reflect that style so your pictures will look they belong on your walls.

How Do You Want to Display Your Family Photos?

While “somewhere on the walls” is a good enough place to start, get specific with how you’ll use the pictures of your family. Do you want a big canvas as the focal point in your living room? Maybe some black and white prints for the bedroom? And wall displays are just one option. You may also want to use some of your images for gifts, cards, or photo albums.

When and Where Will Your Family Photo Session Take Place?

Now that you’ve decided where your images will be beautifully displayed, you’ll also want to decide on the when and where. The season may influence what colors you want to wear. And for an outdoor shoot it will definitely help you decide whether a chunky sweater or summer dress is the way to go! Shooting in a studio, at your home, or at the beach all have a different vibe, so you’ll want to plan outfits accordingly.

For a spring or summer shoot, opt for light, flowy fabrics that capture the gentle breeze and natural light beautifully. Also, poet dresses, with its airy silhouette and delicate detailing, can be a perfect choice for these warmer months, adding a touch of romantic elegance to your ensemble. Pair it with subtle accessories and natural makeup to keep the focus on the dress and the serene surroundings.

What Accessories Do You Want to Include?

Last but not least, it’s time to get into the details. Little things like accessories can make a big difference. They’re a small but special touch you can incorporate into your family photos to make them uniquely yours. This is especially true if you’re planning to use family heirlooms (like your mother’s necklace or your grandmother’s wedding ring) as accessories. Be sure to let me know their significance so I capture them during the session.
