What Families Should Know Before Hiring

How to find a nanny in Houston is something many parents start thinking about when welcoming a new baby, returning to work, or simply needing more support at home. As a Houston newborn and family photographer, I work with families during some of the biggest transitions in their lives, and finding trusted childcare can be a big part of that season.

To help, I asked Houston Nannies to share what families should know before beginning their search. Their founder has experience on both sides of the process, first working as a nanny herself and now helping Houston families find professional in-home childcare.

Below are her tips for finding the right nanny for your family…

1. Find a Nanny in Houston That Fits Your Family

Finding the right nanny is about so much more than finding someone who is available during the hours you need. You’re choosing someone who will spend significant time in your home, care for your children, and become an important part of your family’s everyday life.

Before interviewing candidates, get clear about the role you’re trying to fill.

Think beyond simply, “We need a nanny.”

Consider your ideal schedule, your children’s ages, how long you expect to need care, whether you’ll need help transporting children, and what responsibilities you expect your nanny to handle.

For example, do you need a full-time nanny for an infant? Someone experienced with multiple children? A nanny who can help with children’s laundry, meal preparation, organization, or transportation?

The clearer the position is from the beginning, the easier it is to find a nanny whose experience and expectations align with your family.

2. Look for the Right Nanny Experience

Loving children is important, but professional nanny care requires much more.

When evaluating nanny candidates, families should look closely at previous childcare experience, references, reliability, communication skills, and whether the candidate’s background matches the needs of their particular children.

An experienced infant nanny, for example, may bring knowledge of feeding routines, developmental milestones, sleep schedules, and the changing needs of a baby during the first year.

A nanny caring for older children may need an entirely different skill set.

At Houston Nannies, we believe a successful placement isn’t simply about finding a qualified person. It’s about finding the right fit between the nanny and the family.

3. Don’t Skip the Nanny Vetting Process

Inviting someone to care for your children requires a level of due diligence that goes beyond a great interview.

Families hiring independently should have a thorough vetting process that can include identity verification, professional reference checks, appropriate background screening, driving-record considerations when driving is part of the position, and verification of relevant experience or credentials.

References are particularly important. Speaking directly with previous employers can provide context that a résumé alone cannot.

This is one of the reasons some families choose to work with a professional nanny agency in Houston rather than managing the entire search and screening process themselves.

4. Find the Right Family-Nanny Match

One of the biggest lessons I learned from being a nanny myself is that a placement can look perfect on paper and still not be the right match.

Personality, communication style, parenting philosophy, expectations, boundaries, and household dynamics all matter.

A family may prefer a nanny who is structured and schedule-oriented, while another may want someone particularly energetic and comfortable planning outings and activities.

Neither is inherently better. The goal is compatibility.

That’s why families should use interviews to understand how a nanny approaches caregiving, rather than simply running through a checklist of qualifications.

5. Treat Your Nanny Position Like a Professional Job

A healthy nanny-family relationship starts with clear expectations.

Before employment begins, both sides should understand the schedule, compensation, responsibilities, paid time off, holidays, overtime expectations, transportation requirements, reimbursement arrangements, and other important terms of employment.

Putting expectations in writing can prevent misunderstandings later.

Professionalism should go both ways. Families are trusting a nanny with something incredibly important, their children, while the nanny is also relying on the family for their livelihood and working environment.

Why Houston Nannies

The decision to start Houston Nannies was influenced heavily by her own experience working as a nanny.

Macy quotes…

“I’ve been on the other side of the interview. I’ve experienced what it’s like to enter a family’s home and become part of their daily routine. And I’ve seen how important communication, expectations, trust, and compatibility are to making that relationship successful.

I wanted to create a nanny agency that approached placements with an understanding of both the family’s perspective and the nanny’s perspective.

Today, Houston Nannies helps families throughout the Houston area navigate the process of finding professional in-home childcare with greater confidence.

Rather than simply introducing families to available candidates, our goal is to create thoughtful matches between families and nannies who have the experience, qualifications, and personalities that fit the position”.
