I love including siblings in a newborn session. There is nothing sweeter than an older sibling holding a baby or planting a kiss on top of their head. If you have your heart set on beautiful newborn and sibling images, read on for what to expect when involving siblings in newborn portraits.

Every Child is Unique

A child’s reaction to posing with their new baby brother or sister will vary. Some older siblings love cuddling with and kissing “their” baby. Others want nothing to do with photos, and may even cry or become upset if they’re forced to interact.

Be Patient and Flexible

Sometimes, all it takes is a little time for a young child to warm up to the idea. I often start newborn sessions by taking a few pictures of their sibling, to help them feel like they’ve gotten their fair share of attention! Also, flexibility is key. A child may not want to hold the baby, but be perfectly happy to lay next to them on the bed. Allow them to do what feels comfortable. It can make all the difference in how much they enjoy the experience–and how well it turns out.

Remember, Your Photographer Seen It All

If you’re worried about my reaction as a photographer, don’t be! I am a mom myself, I have worked with hundreds of Houston families, and I truly have seen it all. Your child’s reaction–no matter what it is–is very unlikely to surprise me. And I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to help siblings feel special and important during a newborn photography session. Rest assured, we will be able to get beautiful images of your whole family!
