I did an outdoor sunset family photography session recently for this family of four. We met at a private park in Spring, Texas for this session. It’s a beautiful spot, with a pond and walking trails.

The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset are the most magical time for photographers. The lighting is warm and perfect, there’s a minimum of glare, and the shadows are predictable and easy to work with. As a bonus, the temperature is usually really comfortable at these times as well–at least in Texas, where I run my photography business.

The two little girls in this family were so cute! Big sister had her hair braided especially for the pictures. She looked just beautiful. I love the timeless, classic look of braids. Baby sister had the most gorgeous deep-blue eyes. I loved getting pictures of her precious little face!

Mom got her hair and makeup done before this sunset family photography session. I always encourage this! I think it makes such a difference for the way clients feel during their session. There is no better time for a little beauty treatment and pampering than right before a photography session. In fact, I consider hair and makeup such an important element of the professional photography experience that I partner with a professional hair and makeup artist. Annalisa Hastings is an amazing hair and makeup artist featured on The Knot and Woodlands Bride. She is great at what she does and helps my clients to feel comfortable and confident.

Another important element of planning your family portrait photography session is choosing what to wear. I encourage clients to wear something comfortable and classic. These photographs will become personalized artwork that your family will treasure forever. Try to avoid trendy clothing or styles that will look dated a few years down the line. Neutral colors are always a great choice, but make it personal as well. If you have favorite colors or accessories, feel free to include them. If you’re not sure you have anything that will work at home, renting is always an option. I also carry a studio line of clothing that clients are welcome to borrow from.
