If you’re familiar with my photography style, you know that I love to capture beautiful, authentic moments. Highly posed images (such as the froggy pose) or images that rely heavily on props (like baby tucked into a wooden bowl) aren’t something you’re going to see from my studio. But that doesn’t mean I don’t use posing at all. I just like to use it in a way that feels organic and doesn’t draw attention to itself. Read on for a few of my favorite sweet and natural poses for newborn photography.
Swaddle Poses
Babies spend so much of their time bundled up that swaddle poses are an obvious choice for natural newborn photography that doesn’t feel overly posed. I have so many lovely wraps and swaddles at the studio, and lots of swaddling methods so we can get the perfect look.
Snuggle Poses
The best poses are the ones that reflect real life. I love to capture pretty images of mom cradling her newborn, dad holding baby against his chest, or an older brother or sister kissing the top of their new little sibling’s head. These poses require minimal direction on my part because they happen so naturally!
Detail Poses
Not all poses need to involve baby’s face or entire body. Sometimes sweet and natural poses for newborn photography are just a matter of bringing out the beauty in tiny details. Shots of parents hands cradling their little one’s feet, or a closeup on the way those lashes curl up against baby’s cheek are examples of poses with a limited focus but boundless love.
Posing is such an important part of any photographer’s style. As you look through portfolios, pay attention to the poses used and how it makes you feel. For me, sweet and natural poses for newborn photography are the best way to capture the essence of those precious memories with your little one!
If you feel the same way, I hope you’ll be in touch so we can discuss details. I’ll help you with decisions like where to hold it, what to wear, and how to use your finished images. I can’t wait for your session!
Lots of love,
Shannon
