I’m sometimes asked if it’s okay if the fur babies join us during an at home session. The answer is, “Absolutely!” Our family has two rescue dogs (Hope and Charlie) who add so much joy to our home. So I definitely have a soft spot for fur babies and am happy to include every member of your family in photographs. Here are a few tips for including fur babies in your at home session so that everyone has a great time!

Keep Things Familiar

One reason at home sessions are best for pets is because they are already in a familiar environment. This means they’re much more likely to feel relaxed and happy–which makes for the best pictures! Animals tend to be sensitive to changes in their environment, so keeping as close to their routine as possible will set them up for success.

Use Treats and Toys

There’s nothing like a treat to grab a pet’s attention! Use a favorite toy or goodie to help direct your pet to where you’d like them to be.

Take Breaks

Just like young children, pets sometimes need to take a break. If they don’t seem to be cooperating, try taking them into the backyard for a potty break or a game of fetch. Or just let them play on their own while you capture some other shots. They’ll probably be feeling much more focused after a rest.

Capture Candid Moments

My photography style focuses more on capturing natural moments than on posing. And the same holds true when there are pets involved! There’s really no need to force a cute pose. Just snuggle with your pet, let them sit on the couch with you, or pat them as they lie down at your feet. The moments that happen naturally often make the prettiest pictures.
