So excited for all the fall photos! And cooler weather…is anybody else craving those crisp autumn mornings when maybe a cardigan or scarf would be just the ticket to add a touch of warmth and pizzazz to your outfit? In the meantime, since we’re on the topic of outfits, I thought I’d share a few ideas on what to wear for fall family photos.

Layers for Cooler Weather

Layers are a must, especially for an outdoor photoshoot. And fall is the perfect time to break out those lighter scarves, sweaters, and cute boots. In addition to being flexible in case of weather changes, layers can also add interest, texture, and a little pop of color to your fall family portraits.

Fall Colors

Earthy tones are gorgeous for fall–especially if earth tones will work well with your home decor. I love the pretty shades of olive green, burgundy, rust, pumpkin spice, and marigold. But earth tones aren’t the only option. The trees go bold and bright with their colors, and so can you! Neutrals, jewel tones, and even pastels can be beautiful choices against an autumn backdrop.

Family Photos Coordination

When considering what to wear for fall family photos, remember that you don’t all have to wear the exactly same colors or outfit types. Instead of matching, focus on coordinating. A good way to do this is to choose one or two main colors to build your wardrobe around. Once you have your main pieces, you can play with throwing in little splashes of complementary colors that play well together.

A Little Something Extra: Accessories

A great place to do this is in the accessories. You don’t want to go overboard with the accessories–the focus should be on you. But a well-chosen necklace or hat can add personality and charm to your photos without being a distraction. Accessories can also be a great way to add seasonal textures and patterns, like knit or crochet, plaid, or velvet. Again, less is more, but an accent here or there can be the perfect touch!
