What to wear for family portraits is something I’m asked about all the time! Because every family is different, it’s hard to give blanket advice on outfit choices. This is one of the reasons I meet with each and every client before the session. Rather than worrying too much about general rules, here are 5 questions I always ask to help you decide on the perfect outfits.
Tell Me About Yourself!
First, I need to know all about you. I need to know your style, the colors in your home, and what you want to do with your family portraits.
Where Will Your Photos Be Displayed?
Next, we will decide on where the photographs will hang on your walls, how they will be displayed and any other ideas you have (like framed prints for family or special surprises.)
Where and When Will Your Session Take Place?
After we have decided on where these images will be beautifully displayed, we need to decide on the location. Is it spring or fall? Are we going to the beach or to your favorite outdoor sunset location?
What Accessories Would You Love to Use?
Now that we have decided on the most important details, we have things pretty narrowed down. Next, we need to decide on accessories. Big or Small. Mom, Dad and Children.
Are There Any Family Heirlooms You’d Love to Incorporate?
Last but not least, family heirlooms. Is there something special that you want to incorporate into your session? Are you going to wear your mother’s necklace or your grandmother’s wedding ring? I just like to know about sentimental accessories so that I am sure to capture them during your session.
