I love capturing those sweet newborn details, like tiny toes and baby fuzz. But the best thing about a newborn session is documenting the love of family–especially that precious relationship of parents with their new baby. I want you to feel completely relaxed and comfortable as we create images of you and your infant together. And part of that means knowing what to wear for your newborn session, so you can feel at ease, with nothing to distract from the experience.

What Should Moms Wear for a Newborn Session?

Personally, my favorite outfit choice for moms is a light, flowing dress. Dresses are not only super comfortable (a must!) but also very feminine and beautiful. They look very natural in photos, whether you’re doing your newborn session at the studio or in your own home. (And I have an entire collection for you to choose from.) However, you want to make sure to match your own style! If you feel more comfortable in pants, then slacks or fitted jeans paired with a favorite blouse are also great.

 

What Should Dads Wear for a Newborn Session?

A nice pair of jeans or casual slacks and a button-up shirt or sweater make a great outfit option for new dads. Again, the goal is to wear something you feel comfortable in that will blend well with the overall look of your newborn photos.

What About Shoes?

If we’re doing a session in the studio, just wear a nice pair of shoes that matches your outfit. We probably won’t be getting your feet, so no need to stress too much about it. If we’re doing your newborn session at home, I’m more likely to get full head-to-toe images. In your home though, there’s more flexibility. In fact, barefoot is often best! After all, we want you to look completely at home and natural during a lifestyle photo session.

Anything Else We Should Know?

My style is classic and timeless, so I advise neutrals over colors. However, make sure you choose an outfit that will match your background, especially if you’re doing an at-home newborn session. You want your newborn photos to match your décor. If you’re going with colors, earth tones and either pale or deep versions of colors tend to be better than bright shades.
