As a professional newborn photographer, I’m sometimes asked, “Why newborn photography?”
Sometimes people are asking why I’m drawn to this particular type of session. Why did I choose to specialize in capturing moments with little ones? And sometimes they’re wondering if they should invest in newborn photography. Is it really that important? Couldn’t they just take pictures themselves? Wouldn’t that be more natural and allow them to capture more moments?
There is plenty of information out there to tell you why newborn photography is important in a general way. Things like safety in baby posing, beautiful props, and perfect lighting that you might not get at home. And yes, those things are important–especially the safety of your baby!
But for me, the answer to “Why newborn photography?” is a lot more personal. It’s about the details. So, here are just a few of the reasons I personally am drawn to this type of photography–and why I believe every mama should have images like these!
Mom Should Be in Her Baby’s Photos
As a mom myself, I know. I am almost always the one behind the camera, not in front with my babies. And that’s not just because I’m a photographer by profession. It’s just the way it tends to be. As moms, we instinctively know the importance of capturing those memories, so we’re usually the ones taking pictures.
But I believe every mama should have images that show her holding her little ones, kissing them, cuddling together–those moments that make mothering worth it! And believe me, both you and your children will treasure those photos so much more if you are in them.
Capture the Essence of Precious Moments
Some of the most sweet and precious times are hard to capture while they’re happening. I remember middle of the night feedings, and I remember the sweetest moments right after, holding my baby close, trying not to fall asleep because we were both so comfortable…and because I never wanted to forget what it felt like to hold them like this.
As your newborn photographer, I won’t be there for every memory. But I do make a point of capturing the natural poses, the moments when you are so wrapped up in your little one that you forget there’s a camera–the essence of moments that matter.
Beautiful Artwork That is True to Life
After years of honing my craft–and continuing to learn more every day–I know that there is a gentle art to newborn photography. It’s not something that can be forced or rushed, and it is magical to watch it unfold. One of the reasons why newborn photography by a professional is important is because we know how to document those early memories in the most beautiful way possible.
Part of that is very practical, like lighting, or the angle at which you hold your camera. You can find tips for things like that online. But part of it only comes with experience. Like knowing how to set both parents and baby at ease and help them feel comfortable. Or being alert enough to capture tiny, unposed moments that happen naturally and can become the highlight of the session.
And part of it comes from being able to share those precious moments and pass them down to your children through cherished artwork and albums. For me, no session is complete without a canvas, a framed piece of wall art, or a book of memories. These are a lot of work to put together on your own, which is why I make sure that artwork is included in every session.
