The Very First Session I Photographed with My Nikon D 750

Nikon is still my favorite brand…. but that doesn’t mean I was a better photographer because I had a brand new camera! One of the most common questions I get from photographers, is what lens should I buy? And while your lens is important, understanding your settings, and what your lens can do, is very important as well.

Below is a little story of why…

A little story from the beginning…

I have this picture in my office – it was the first “photo-shoot” I took of my kids with my brand new 2015 Nikon D750 and a 35mm sigma art 1.4 lens… I was in LOVE with this picture.

Bokeh

After I started taking online photography classes in 2015, after I decided I was going to give this photography business thing a try… and a mentor told me not to use this image on my website because everyone wasn’t in focus. So I thought, I’ll edit it so it will be in focus. I know now, you can’t do that… if you shoot at a low aperture, with your lens wide open, the only thing that will be in focus is what you are focusing on. Everything else in the background is supposed to be “blurry” and that’s called Bokeh. Photographers spend thousands of $$$$ on lenses that do this exact thing.

Education

With that being said, I have learned a lot in the last 20 years. I started with a film camera in 1997 (I was the dance team photographer), and now I teach photographers how to create artwork and run successful photography studios. I still invest in photography education every year, and this year I’m working on an online video course for photographers, in addition to my 1:1 mentoring, that will be a step-by-step guide on how to create and sell artwork from your photography studio, even if you have a home office like I did in the very beginning. With all of this being said, growth is slow.

Advice

Another photographer once told me that your business is like a plant, you have to water it, and give it light, and love for it to grow, and this is so true. I’m not really a plant person, mine usually don’t make it at my house, but thankfully this business has… and I do have to pour a little love into it every day. If you are reading this, and you have a dream or a goal, just know that everything takes time, and with a little love, you can make whatever you want to grow, bloom too!
