The holidays are a season of gratitude and giving. But for some, they can also be an especially sensitive time. As a photographer, you will sometimes be called to photograph families in times of need. Sometimes, this is to capture last memories with a loved one who won’t be with them much longer. Other times, it’s to continue documenting family memories even when an important member of the circle is no longer present.
Forever Memories
This is a hard thing to talk about, and a hard thing to do. But it may be something that comes up as your business grows. Over my own years as a photographer I have photographed families that are missing a child, a grandparent, a fur-baby. I have put together slideshows and helped print images for their celebrations of life. And I have been there with families who are preparing to say goodbye to someone they love more than words can say.
This may or may not be something you feel called to do. But it’s something you should be prepared for, so that you know how to answer with compassion when these requests come up.
Giving Back as Part of Your Business Model
Whatever your decision on this particular issue, I would encourage you to include giving back in some way as part of your business model--whatever that looks like. Whether you set aside some of your time to offer a free session to someone who needs it, create a rainbow baby program, or participate in a program like Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, giving back is an important way to tap into your deepest values and create something that is more than a business, but a community and a true service to others.
If you have questions about how you can give back to your community as a photographer, I hope you’ll reach out. I would love to support you in this important aspect of your journey!
Holiday blessings and lots of love,
Shannon
