As a Houston family photographer, I have lots of tips and tricks to get the best poses for family portraits. But I’ve also learned one of the most important secrets of all:

It’s about connection.

You can learn all day about angles, the rule of thirds, and complementary outfit colors. You can invest time in figuring out your camera settings and creating great lighting. And all of those things are important. But for images that are more than just pictures, for images that can become cherished memories and heirloom artwork, all you really need is to highlight the love and laughter that are part of your everyday life.

When I pose my clients, I use natural cues. I’ll ask them to walk around holding hands. I’ll tell the kids to hug their daddy, or ask mom to kiss her babies. I’ve learned that the most beautiful portraits are already there, just waiting to be captured in those moments.

But you can use this secret trick to capture beautiful portraits anytime, anywhere. The key is to focus more on the people than the poses. If you are feeling stiff or unnatural in front of the camera, relax and remember that it’s about telling a story. Focus on holding hands, sharing smiles, exchanging hugs and kisses. Focus on those sweet little details like the sparkle in your daughter’s eyes, the dimple in her cheek, or your baby’s tiny toes and fingers. But mostly and most importantly, just focus on the connection that your family has.
