I had the greatest weekend with a few of my sweet clients, but I couldn’t help but notice that I have heard a couple of them talk about a tongue tie procedure that both of their babies had to have.

So I was curious, what is a tongue tie’d Baby?

According to Texas Children’s Hospital, “Ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, is a condition present at birth where the lingual frenulum (attachment between the tongue and the floor of mouth) is short, tight and thick. It is often connected close to the tip of the tongue and prevents its movement. Tongue-tie can contribute to poor breastfeeding and maternal nipple pain.”

At the session, my client did mention that her skin was bleeding while nursing, which is a symptom for sure. But she was also warned that this can be easily over diagnosed, so be sure to get a second opinion.

I was curious, how and where do they do the procedure?

Well, according to Texas Children’s again… “Frenotomy, frenulotomy or frenulectomy are terms used for the release of the frenulum. This procedure can be performed at our otolaryngology office with minimal discomfort  and your infant can be fed immediately after. For older children, or in case of thicker frenuloms, a frenotomy is performed under general anesthesia. ”

What does this mean?

At another session, a client said that her doctor snipped the baby’s mouth. It was not a good experience. However… my other client, who is in school to be a pediatrician, said that you can go to a Pediatric Dentist and they have a procedure where they use a laser type of treatment and it heals on the spot, much better than the other option.

Where can you find the laser treatment and what is that?

I googled “Houston Pediatric Dentist” and found information on Why use a laser? Historically, this procedure has been performed with a scalpel. A laser is a modern alternative, which allows for a less painful procedure for your child. Furthermore, a laser assisted frenectomy will have less scar tissue development for your infant. “>West U Pediatric Dentistry’s Website…

Why use a laser?

“Historically, this procedure has been performed with a scalpel.  A laser is a modern alternative, which allows for a less painful procedure for your child.  Furthermore, a laser assisted frenectomy will have less scar tissue development for your infant. “

One client that had the original procedure done, had to go back and get the laser done, so I think that heading to a Pediatric Dentist is best (after you discuss everything with your pediatrician for sure!)

The Newborn Session

As your newborn photographer, the most important part of this experience is a happy and healthy baby. If there are ever any issues going on, I aways recommend going to your doctor to make sure baby is healed and safe before your session.

In conclusion, if you ever have any questions about your session please don’t hesitate to contact me! I’m always here to help! Thanks again for reading the blog!

Lots of Love!
