When you book a professional photography session, one of the biggest questions on your mind may be, “What should I wear?” And that question can seem even harder to answer for a maternity session. Your wardrobe choices may feel more limited during pregnancy, and you may be reluctant to purchase a beautiful dress that you’ll only wear a handful of times. Not to worry, in this post I’ll be sharing lots of ideas on what to wear for your maternity session.

Style

When choosing what to wear for your maternity session, think about your personal style preferences. Do you love loose, flowy gowns or do you like the look of something a little more form-fitting to show off that baby bump? This gorgeous mother-to-be liked a variety of styles–which I can absolutely accommodate! I love the contrast between the lacy gown and classy sweater dress. Both beautiful choices!

Color

Another thing to consider is color. Think about not only the colors you love, but which ones will work best in your home. Personally, I love neutrals, and this mother was on the same page. Neutrals are classic and timeless, and I always recommend using at least some of them in your session. But if you like a pop of color, don’t be afraid to choose a bolder outfit for some of your pregnancy photos. (See a sampling of some brighter colored maternity gowns here.)

Location

Where will your maternity session take place? I offer sessions at my studio, in the comfort of your own home, or outdoors near sunrise or sunset. If you love the look of a maxi dress against a field of grass, you’ll want to take that into consideration when planning both the location of your session and what to wear.

Be Yourself

Don’t be afraid to play with outfits and have fun experimenting. When you book a maternity session with Shannon Reece Jones Photography, you’ll have access to my client wardrobe, with so many options. While you’re welcome to purchase your own outfits, we’ll also meet beforehand so you can look through the client closet and pick out anything you’d like to borrow for your session. I love the variety this mom chose. All of the styles are so different–from an elegant wrap for silhouetting that baby bump, to a casual button-up shirt for intimate portraits with her husband.
